Fans of the anime adaptation of the manga "Tokyo Ghoul" are undoubtedly waiting for Season 3. Season 2, called "Tokyo Ghoul √A," ended with Episode 12, which aired in Japan more than a year ago, in March 2015.
There have been speculations that Season 3 might come out this winter, but there is still no official announcement from the companies or people involved. There have also been reports that Madhouse Entertainment has taken over the production from Studio Pierrot.
In terms of plot, there are rumors that it will be based on the manga, unlike Season 2, which had an original story. According to Yibada, fans were not happy with the second season so the production company is likely to be more faithful to the manga's storyline in Season 3. Reports also say that the plot might be from the sequel series, "Tokyo Ghoul:re," which is set two years after the conclusion of the original series.
"Tokyo Ghoul:re" features Haise Sasaki, who leads the Quinx Squad, a special team of CCG investigators who were experimented on to have ghoul abilities. He and his team are tasked to look for dangerous ghouls, and eventually remembers that he is Ken Kaneki.
There are also reports that Season 3 might show Kaneki becoming the new One-Eyed King. One-eyed ghouls are human-ghoul hybrids, Kaneki, Nimura Furuta and Eto among them. After Kaneki defeats Kishou Arima, he claims in "Tokyo Ghoul:re" Chapter 86 that he is the One-Eyed King.
It is yet unknown when "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 will be aired and what it will focus on, but fans can look forward to the live-action movie. It stars Masataka Kubota as Ken Kaneki and Fumika Shimizu as Touka Kirishima. According to Crunchy Roll, Yu Aoi will portray Rize Kamishiro, Nabokyuki Suzuki as Kotaro Amon and Yo Oizumi as Kureo Mado.
The "Tokyo Ghoul" movie, directed by Kentaro Hiragawa, will be shown in theaters in 2017.
