A familiar face is headed back to Mystic Falls. "The Vampire Diaries" boss Julie Plec has revealed that fans will see the return of Sheriff Forbes in Season 8.

Speaking with KSiteTV, Plec confirmed that Marguerite McIntyre will reprise her role as the town's sheriff on "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8. The character is set to resurface in the third episode of the new season. In addition, Plec said that they plan to involve other beloved characters in the show's final run as well.

"Obviously I want to make sure that Elena is in the finale," the showrunner said.

"We still have characters like Tyler and Jeremy who are alive, and then we have plenty of characters who we've lost over the years that we love so deeply that maybe we can see them in flashbacks or other creative ways."

As to whether the characters from "The Vampire Diaries" will move on to "The Originals" after season 8, Plec was open to the idea. Without spilling too much about the series finale, the executive producer said that "there is definitely an opportunity" for the Salvatores and other fan-favorite characters to migrate to the world of the Mikaelsons in the future. For now, Plec promises that they have planted "little Easter eggs" throughout the final season for longtime fans who have been with the show since day one.

"The Vampire Diaries" previously cast Joel Gretsch in a recurring role for Season 8. According to Entertainment Weekly, the actor has been tapped to play the role of Peter - described as a blue-collar guy who abandoned his family a long time ago. He will figure in the new season when his grown son walks back into his life to reconnect - and to drag him into a world of supernatural dangers.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 premieres on Friday, Oct. 21 at 8PM on the CW.
