During Gamescom 2016, Electronic Arts announced that developer Criterion Games will be developing a "Star Wars Battlefront" VR missions for the X-Wing fighter experience and had announced it to be free for anyone who bought the game on the PlayStation 4. Initially holding back on any more details, EA recently revealed that the missions will have tie-ins with the upcoming movie "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."
According to IGN, Criterion producer Pete Lake confirmed the VR Missions' connection with the movie "Rogue One" during EA's announcement in Gamescom 2016. However, Lake has not elaborated any more details on its connection with the upcoming film.
An interview from the official EA blog with James Svensson, another producer at Criterion Games, revealed that working on the game has been a great experience, even stating that his "office chair has been an X-wing cockpit." Svensson stated that Criterion has had a passion for developing games with action vehicle sequences, especially working on the speeder bikes for "Star Wars Battlefront." He further added that this will be a perfect opportunity to apply their passion to something new - "a new way for people to connect to 'Star Wars' in a spectacular X-wing VR gaming experience."
The Criterion producers also mentioned that the VR Missions is not meant to be a separate game itself but an extension of the base game. Additionally, the producers also worked very closely with Lucasfilm to "ensure that the VR experience is fun and exciting for 'Star Wars' fans" and to make that connection with the "Rogue One" film.
Although no exact release dates have been confirmed, the VR missions will be released this coming holiday. In addition to that, PlayStation VR will be launched on October 13 and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" will be released on December 16 in theaters.
