Following the successful launch of the Radeon RX 470 and the Radeon RX 460, tech giant AMD also released a new Crimson driver to support the two mid-range Polaris video cards. The new Crimson version 16.8.1 provides driver support for the RX 470 and RX 460, at the same time it also fixes the maximum memory overclock issue with the RX 480.

Several overclocking websites claim that the maximum memory overclock offered for the RX 480 through the Radeon WattMan utility is just too low. AMD said that it has already addressed this issue with the latest version of the Crimson driver.

Moreover, AMD also fixed the reported application crash of the game "Overwatch" when playing on some RX 480 configurations using AMD Crossfire technology. AMD also fixed the poor Crossfire scaling for the game "The Division," especially when played on lower resolution configurations. The issue regarding poor "DOTA 2" performance when playing the game in Crossfire mode was also fixed.

According to PC Gamer, AMD also corrected the incorrect reporting of the Vulkan driver or API version when accessed Radeon Settings. The problem with Firefox users experiencing application crash when hardware acceleration is enabled was also fixed.

The reported low frame rate and occasional stutter when playing "Wolfenstein: The Old Blood" on the RX 480 were also fixed. The occasional crash when updating drivers through the Radeon Settings was also fixed. According to AnandTech, a new Crossfire profile for "Codemasters F1 2016" was also added on the Radeon Settings.

The new Crimson version 16.8.1 update is a relatively minor update. The update was rolled out in order to fix minor bugs, as well as add support for the RX 470 and the RX 460.

AMD said that it is still working on a major release of its Crimson driver which the company aims to fix notable bugs and a dozen known issues. Most prominent, and annoying, of these is the AMD Gaming Evolved overlay that causes some games to crash when enabled. As of this writing, the only workaround for this issue is to completely disable the overlay.
