Sony has kept its silence regarding details about its much-hyped PlayStation 4 NEO console. On the other hand, there are rumors and speculations claiming that the Japanese tech giant is gearing up for the console's official announcement which might in New York on Sept. 7.

The rumored event will highlight the hardware capabilities of the PlayStation 4 Neo. A source confirmed to Vice that the event will be a "technical showcase." The event will take place in New York City much like the launch event of the PlayStation 3 console back in 2013.

The PlayStation 4 NEO comes in many monikers. Gamers and developers have referred to the console as PlayStation 4.5 and PlayStation 4K. The main idea behind the naming scheme is that the console will feature upgraded hardware that will dramatically improve visual output at a much higher frame rate and may even support 4K resolution, according to WCCFTech.

Sony's decision to unveil the PlayStation 4 NEO in September may have been due to financial reasons. AMD, the manufacturer that provides Sony with the chips for the PlayStation 4, recently launched faster, cheaper, and smaller Polaris graphics processing units. This will allow video cards to perform better at much lower prices.

By incorporating these new AMD chips into the PlayStation 4 NEO, the console can gain significant performance improvements without costing too much on the upgrade thereby opening a chance for Sony to rack up its revenue. The PlayStation 4 currently sells for around $350. Rumors claim that Sony is planning to release the Sony PlayStation 4 NEO somewhere in the $400 price point.

The introduction of a new console that supports 4K resolution could also drive the demand and sales of 4K televisions. A factor that could be very beneficial for Sony's display division.

As for Microsoft, the company recently released the Xbox One S. A slimmer version of the Xbox One which supports 4K video resolution and sports the new AMD Polaris chips.
