The "Suicide Squad" anti-hero ensemble might get a second chance to show up on big screens with a follow-up because of its box-office success. Director David Ayer already have some ideas on what could be next for the film's villain-turned-heroes.

In an interview, Ayer said that the cliffhanger at the end of the film was intentional. He went to say that there is indeed a plan to make room for possible future instalments, Collider reported.

"We shot that during the first week of photography... I don't want to give stuff away but it's that anything is possible, and that's the thing, for as much control and commend Amanda Waller has over these guys, at the end of the day they're supervillains and they're gonna do supervillain stuff," he said.

Ayer added that the end scene of "Suicide Squad" with Joker (played by Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (played by Margot Robbie) might open plot possibilities for the film franchise in the future.

"Plus, the Joker/Harley relationship just seemed like the right button for the movie, it opens so many doors if another one of these were ever to turn up under a rock somewhere," he added.

True enough, cast member Leto did say that they had enough footage to depict a deeper story between Joker and Harley Quinn. Unfortunately, most of these scenes were deleted to avoid a rated R release, Batman News reported via BBC 1 radio interview.

For now, Warner Brothers has not officially confirmed a plan to make a follow-up, nor did they confirm that Ayer will be at the helm just in case. Asked whether Ayer have actually written another "Suicide Squad" film, the director was coy in his response.

"I don't know, there may be a cocktail napkin with some scribbles on it somewhere, I don't know," he said while laughing.
