The much awaited installment of Marvel Studios' "Guardians of the Galaxy" will not show any Infinity Stones confirms director James Gunn.

A Facebook user asked Gunn in the comments section on whether or not the film will feature any of the said stones, to which Gunn firmly replied "No, there will be no infinity stones in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."

Gunn said that the “Guardians” installment will be mostly a standalone feature and contrary to fan speculations. Supervillain Thanos will not appear in the film at all, MCU Exchange reported.

In the first installment of the franchise, an infinity stone has been the driving force behind the formation of the protagonists in the “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The other variants of infinity stones has been featured in other films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) such as in “Thor: The Dark World,” “Avengers” and in the “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

So far, four of the six Infinity Stones have been shown namely, the “Space Stone” which was originally contained in the Tesseract, the “Mind Stone” contained inside Loki’s (played by actor Tom Hiddleston) scepter which was also used to create The Vision (played by actor Paul Bethany), the “Reality Stone” contained in the Aether as seen in the second installment of “Thor,” and the “Power Stone” originally contained in “The Orb” as seen in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The “Soul Stone” and the “Time Stone” are yet to make an appearance in the MCU.

For the uninitiated, the Infinity Stones are immensely powerful fictional gems that appeared originally in the Marvel comics. In the film adaptation of several Marvel properties, the concept of Infinity Stones is used as a plot device to connect all Marvel films within the sphere of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con that Peter Quill’s a.k.a Star Lord (played by actor Chris Pratt) is actually Ego: The Living Planet. The character is played by Kurt Russell in the film, Screen Rant reported.

Russell joins by Chris Sullivan, Tommy Flanagan and Elizabeth Debicki, Steve Agee and Pom Klementieff as new characters. Pratt alongside Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista and Bradley Cooper will reprise their roles in the installment.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2” arrives in theaters on May 5, 2017.
