Locally produced films are making waves on China's box office, with "Cold War II" heading the bunch. With the absence of major international titles, six of the top 10 spots were occupied by local flicks.
"Cold War II," a crime thriller set in Hong Kong, raked in $15.6 million during the weekend, helping the film reach more than $85 million in revenue during its 10 day run.
Second on the list is "When Larry Met Mary" which was produced by Peter Chan. The film beat "Cold War II" during the Friday run but was eventually bested over the course of the weekend. "When Larry Met Mary" earned $15.6 million in its first three days in the box office.
In the third place is the animated feature "Big Fish and Begonia" which earned $14 million during its weekend run. The film has already amassed $68.4 million over its 10 day run in the box office, pushing the film an inch closer to be the best performing Chinese animated feature film of all time.
Horror flick "Tik Tok" has a decent opening run in fourth place earning $7.82 million. In fifth place is "Never Gone" which is currently running in its second week. "Never Gone" earned $6.19 million over the weekend and $45.7 million during its 10 day run. Debuting in the sixth place is "For a Few Bullets" with $6.08 million.
Heading the international film list is "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" which sits in the seventh place. The film earned $2.33 million over the weekend and has a 16 day run of $57.5 million.
"Sun Duck," a Chinese-Russian animated feature film, opened in the eight place snatching $2.26 million in the box office. In the ninth place is "Now You See Me 2" which is now on its third week. The film earned $870,000 over the weekend and a total of $95.4 million over its three week run. Tenth on the list is "Rock Dog," an animated feature film, which earned $570,000 during the weekend and $5.84 million in its 10 day run.
