Independence Day: Resurgence is making waves in the Korean box office. The sequel to the original Independence Day released in 1996 landed the number one spot on the Korean box office recording nearly 700,000 viewers in attendance at cinemas.

Independence Day: Resurgence is available in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D versions. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the film picks up the story 20 years after the events that transpired on the original Independence Day film.

Closing in on the second spot is the film adaptation of the popular children's book The Jungle Book. The film is performing well in its second week on the box office recording more than 350,000 in attendance. The film is based on the novel written by British author Rudyard Kipling. The movie has been applauded for its excellent recreation of Kipling's work through CGI effects. The film features at least 70 species of animals and jungle creatures.

The Jungle Books was released in Korea on June 9, and since then the film has amassed more than $175 million and has tallied at least 2 million viewers in attendance.

Local Korean production Proof of Innocence is holding on to the third spot with more than 237,000 in attendance. The film is still performing strongly at the box office despite the competition of several Hollywood box office hits. The film is about a policeman who turned into the manager of a law office and his extensive investigation of a crime committed by a well-known conglomerate. The film has already attracted more than 1 million attendance.

The Conjuring 2, the sequel to the horror film of the same title, sits at the fourth spot. The film, which is also a massive hit in several international markets, attracted more than 204,000 attendance.

Notable Korean director Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden is in fifth place. Going strong on its fourth week on the box office, the film has reached more than 155,000 in attendance.
