Gal Gadot's debut appearance as Wonder Woman in DC's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" became influential, in terms of promoting its upcoming solo movie to be released sometime on 2017. The creator of the character, William Mouton Marstonwas, was a feminist who intended to use the lady superhero as a propaganda to encourage the rise of women in power; however, the actress' interpretation of the character has somehow achieved the same purpose.
There were a lot of significant points highlighted by Wonder Woman's character during the film, and her appearance was meant to deviate fans from the usual damsel in distress kind of story and shift their focus on the importance of an emerging female superhero film. According to Movie Pilot, critics have developed uncertainty in terms of the success with female leads, due to the critical flops experienced by the film "Catwoman" in 2004 followed by "Elektra" in 2005.
However, the DC Extended Universe still hopes that "Wonder Woman" could be the key to unlocking more female leads in the future. For one, the film has already taken away the typical plot of a love story from the script, and stressed on the characters' feature as a warrior. Her relationship with Steve Trevor will still be explored, but it wouldn't be given much emphasis since their relationship remains platonic.
During an interview with Cinema Blend, Gadot shared why playing the role of Wonder Woman was important to her. She believes that through her character, she will be able to teach her daughter how to be strong by depicting the empowered aspect of women.
