"Total Recall" actor Colin Farrell is in talks to join "The Equalizer 2" veteran actor Denzel Washington in Dan Gilroy's thriller "Inner City" for Columbia Pictures. "Nightcrawler" director Gilroy wrote the script and is being helmed on it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell will play the slick, money-focused lawyer who recruits the researcher to his firm. Denzel will play a hard-nosed liberal lawyer named Roman J. Israel. His character has worked as a legal researcher in Los Angeles for decades.

The script of "Inner City" centers on Israel, who has been fighting the good fight while others take the credit, Variety reported. When his mentor and partner passed away due to a sudden heart attack, Israel suddenly takes on the role of the firm's frontman. He is recruited by a prestigious and more cutthroat law firm where he stumbles upon a case that changes his entire life.

In the plot of "Inner City," Israel soon uncovers details about the crusading law firm's history that run afoul of his values of helping the poor and dispossessed. He finds himself in an existential crisis that leads to extreme action.

Todd Black of Escape Artists, Jennifer Fox, and Brian Oliver of Cross Creek are producing "Inner City." Sony recently acquired the package. Cross Creek will co-finance under its Sony deal, along with Charles King's Macro and Lone Star Capital.

Farrell received rave reviews for his performance in Yorgos Lanthimos' dystopian black comedy "The Lobster" and also appeared opposite Anthony Hopkins in the supernatural thriller "Solace." He last appeared in the "Harry Potter" spinoff "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."

Farrell and Lanthimos are re-teaming up in a drama "The Killing of a Sacred Deer." He also recently wrapped production on Sofia Coppola's remake of the classic Clint Eastwood pic "The Beguiled." He is represented by CAA, LBI Entertainment, and Hansen Jacobson.

A mid-March start in Los Angeles is planned for "Inner City," with the production budgeted in the mid-$30 million range.
