Ben Affleck has officially stepped down as the director of his own "Batman" film. However, the project is still very much alive with a shortlist of directors.
According to reports, this includes "War For the Planet of the Apes" director Matt Reeves as the top candidate. While Affleck has a great track record as a director, Reeves' recent efforts are not too far behind either, Screen Rant reported.
Having done character-driven genre films, Reeves has also taken on ambitious blockbuster projects. In 2010, his remake of a Swedish horror film in "Let Me In" was well-received by critics.
Affleck has personally confirmed that he will bring in a director for the project. He said that the reason is because too much workload might impair the necessary focus that he needs to do his best for the role, Variety reported.
"There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film," he said.
For those who are concerned about whether or not this is indicative of Affleck's fading interest in the role, Affleck said that is still "extremely committed" to the project and that his decision is precisely because of his respect for the role. He admitted that in case he did wind up directing "Batman," it would be the biggest challenge and professional pressure he had ever faced.
Warner Bros. has already given its approval and said that it is standing behind Affleck's decision.
"Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck's decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life."
