The last South Korean drama series Song Hye-kyo starred in was the 2013 SBS drama series "That Winter, the Wind Blows." After three years, she is back on the small screen playing the female lead role in the upcoming KBS2 drama series "Descendants of the Sun."
Directed by "Discovery of Romance" director Lee Eung-bok and written by "Heirs" screenwriter Kim Eun-sook, "Descendants of the Sun" tells a story of a young soldier named Yoo Shi-jin and doctors in conflict areas in a fictional country in Central Asia called Uruk. One of the doctors is Kang Mo Yeon, a surgeon played by Song, while the soldier will be played by Song Joong-ki.
"Descendants of the Sun" is set to premiere on KBS on Feb. 24. It will air both in South Korea and in China, Yonhap News has learned.
Joining Hye-kyo and Joong-ki in the cast of "Descendants of the Sun" are Kim Ji-won, Jin Goo, Onew, Kang Shin-il, Jo Woo-ri, Hyun Jyu-ni, Jo Jae-yoon, Lee Seung-joon, Seo Jung-yeon and Jeon Soo-jin. "Running Man" cast member Lee Kwang-soo will also make a cameo appearance.
Before "Descendants of the Sun," Hye-Kyo starred in the Chinese romantic comedy film "The Queens" opposite Joe Chen and "The Last Emperor" actress Vivian Wu. In 2014, Hye-Kyo also starred John Woo's drama film "The Crossing" with Huang Xiao Ming, Japanese-Taiwanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" actress Zhang Ziyi, who will star in the upcoming Universal Pictures comedy film "East/West," Deadline reported.
Hye-kyo made her debut in a TV show in 1996 in the KBS2 drama series "First Love." She went on to star in 19 other drama series including "Wedding Dress," "Six Siblings," "White Nights 3.98," "How am I?," "Sweet Bride," "Autumn in my Heart," "Guardian Angel," "Hotelier," "All In," "Sunlight Pours Down" and "Full House" opposite "Ninja Assassin" star Rain, who is set to star in the upcoming SBS drama series "Please Come Back, Mister."
