"Agents of SHIELD" is not yet done with the Ghost Rider's storyline. Executive producer Jed Whedon has recently confirmed that Marvel fans have not yet seen the last of the iconic comic book character.

As revealed during the midseason finale "The Laws of Inferno Dynamics," Ghost Rider and his uncle Eli Morrow have disappeared to a yet to be known location when an experiment has gone south. While this is the case, Coulson had a conversation with Quake hinting on the possibility that Robbie could still resurface at some point.

Speaking with TV Line, Whedon alongside co-showrunner Jeff Bell assured fans that the Ghost Rider is still out there, while also explaining that a 22-episode arc for the character is a little bit too much. So, for now the direction they're taking on in the remaining episodes is towards the LMD storyline.

"He is trapped in another place, which usually means that he's not dead," Whedon said.

Adds Bell: "[Ghost Rider is] a lot for 22 [episodes], especially with everything else that we like and care about on the show."

"It would feel like one flavor over a long period of time, but we've certainly left it open."

In addition, the producers admitted that the CGI effects needed in bringing Ghost Rider to life on screen calls for a bigger budget. The LMD storyline, on the other hand, "doesn't cost as much," Bell said.

When "Agents of SHIELD" returns for its midseason premiere, viewers will find Coulson still in the dark of May's secret as he grows closer with her LMD version and Aida is unrelenting in her search for the Darkhold. The episode titled "Broken Promises" airs on Tuesday, Jan. 10 on ABC.

"Agents of SHIELD" stars Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Hestridge, Henry Simmons, and John Hannah.
