2016 has been a great year for "Star Trek" and its fans. This year, the franchise celebrated its 50th anniversary and unveiled that a brand new television show, "Star Trek: Discovery" is in the pipeline.

Here are the things you need to know about its return to the tv fold:

1.     "Star Trek: Discovery" will introduce 3 new characters. Apart from the iconic characters that trekkies have come to love, the upcoming tv show will be joined by Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp and Doug Jones, Star Trek reported.

Yeoh will play Captain Georgiou, a Starfleet Captain aboard the starship Shenzhou. Rapp on the other hand will play Lt. Stamets, a fungus expert astromycologist, and Starfleet science officer on starship Discovery. Lastly, Jones will play Lt. Saru, a member of an alien species that is new to the "Star Trek" universe.

2.     Bryan Fuller will remain as an executive producer. Fuller stepped back as the co-head of the new Star Trek series due to several commitments. But fear not, because his showrunning duties were turned over to the capable hands of executive producers Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts.

3.     "Star Trek: Discovery" will air in 2017 on CBS All Access subscription platform. Set construction is reportedly underway and is nearing completion. Filming will start soon after but it will likely commence at the beginning of 2017, Comic Book Resources reported.

CBS All Access will reportedly stream the first episode for free but trekkies will have to pay $5.99 a month or the ad-free $9.99 to watch the subsequent episodes. For those who are outside the US, the series will be released via Netflix, where the episodes will air within 24 hours after the U.S. premiere.

Plot details about the series are yet to be unveiled but the series hinted that apart from new characters, new civilizations and dramatic contemporary themes will also be explored. Watch the video below for theories about "Star Trek: Discovery."
