"Game of Thrones" actor Richard Madden is in talks to star Amazon's upcoming sci-fi drama pilot "Strange New Things." The drama series is based on Michel Faber's cult hit book "The Book of Strange New Things" in 2014.
According to Deadline, Madden will play as a devout priest named Peter in the "Strange New Things." He left his wife and is sent into space to help find a new colony. However, he ends up discovering not only what puts his faith to the test but also life as we know it. He receives letters from his wife while doing a missionary for the local alien population. Those letters describe chaotic and devastating events back at home. His faith in God and his mission are greatly shaken.
"Bridge of Spies" writer Matt Charman is writing the hour-long pilot "Strange New Things," as IGN reported. "The Last King of Scotland" director Kevin MacDonald is on board to direct it. "Strike Back" Andy Harries and Lila Rawlings from Left Bank Productions are producing as part co-production deal between Amazon Studios and Left Bank Productions.
Madden is best known for his role as Robb Stark in HBO's medieval fantasy series "Game of Thrones." He recently finished playing Romeo in Kenneth Branagh-directed "Branagh Theatre Live: Romeo and Juliet" with Lily James (Juliet). He also appeared earlier this year in James Watkins-helmed action-drama "Bastille Day" alongside Idris Elba. He starred as Prince Charming in Disney's live-action adaption "Cinderella" last year. He will be seen later this year in the TV series "Medici: Masters of Florence" in the lead role of Cosimo de Medici opposite Dustin Hoffman. He is repped by WME and Troika.
"Strange New Things" is the latest television pilot that Amazon Studios has chosen. It will be a 10-episode first season. It has no relation to Netflix's similarly titled hit show "Stranger Things." The production is expected to start by the end of this year.
