Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert was charged three charges according to police report. Those charges are driving under influence, possesion of marijuana and failure to maintain his driving lane during a traffic stop. The court date has not been set in the matter.
Shumpert was arrested near his offseason home in metro Atlanta last month, as reported by The Atlanta Journal Constitution. According to an incident report from the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, he was pulled over on Aug. 10 at 11:30 pm, after a sheriff deputy twice observed the car failing to maintain its lane.
When police pulled him over, Shumpert said that he was on his way to the airport to pick up his father. The deputy then administered a field test and determined it was unsafe for Shumpert to operate a car. He was arrested and later on, police found marijuana in a backpack.
If the 6'5" guard is convicted for DUI, typically NBA will suspend him for two games, according to ESPN. Following his arrest, the Cavaliers issued a statement to acknowledge the situation and the have also discussed the situation with Shumpert to monitor the progress. Cleveland Cavaliers will refrain from further comment until legal process is settled.
"A court date has not been set at this point, and neither Iman or the team will have any additional comments while the matter progresses through the legal process," the team statement said.
Shumpert was traded to Cavs from New York Knicks in 2015. He and JR Smith went to Cleveland in exchange for Lou Amundson and Alex Kirk departure to New York. In his first year in Cleveland, Cavaliers made it to the NBA Finals, before they were lost to Golden State Warriors 4-2.
The Cavaliers won the 2016 NBA title after defeating Golden State Warriors, and Shumpert made a significant impact for the team defense. The Cavs traning cap will start on Sept. 26 to prepare for the upcoming season that start in October.
