Although Niantic Labs have not made any official comment, code data shows that the next Pokemon Go September update will install buddy system, which will enable players to walk their Pokemon pet to get candy reward.

In the Pokemon Go September update, players will be able to walk their critters and get the candy reward, which is required to help Pokemon evolve. Previously, players can only obtain candy by catching duplicates of their Pokémon to receive three candies.

That said method is difficult for rare Pokemon, which is why Niantic Labs prepares a new way to evolve Pokemon. A data mined from the biggest Pokemon GO network traffic analyser in Github showed the new Buddy system that was introduced in the code base in 0.35.0 update, Pokemon GO Hub has learned.

The data clearly showed that players can walk one Pokemon at a time in order to get candy as their reward. The game reuses Egg distance walked calculation and multiple existing endpoints to calculate how far players have walked their Pokemon.

Nonetheless, there will be a daily limit to obtain candy. It is not yet clear how much the distance players must walk to obtain one candy, nor how many maximum candies that players will be able to receive; however, CNET reported that in Pokemon GO's new code, when players walked their Pokemon, other critters could either walk together, fly along, or sit on the players' shoulder.

This Pokemon GO September update will be the second big one for the game, as Niantic previously released Appraisal feature update last month that taught players about battle readiness of their Pokemon.

As one of the most popular augmented reality game, Pokémon Go has successfully brought people outside their house and walked around. This new update will give more focus on players' fitness and health, as players are encouraged to take their critters for a walk.

Niantic Labs have not made any official comment regarding the September update yet, nor respond to a request for comment.
