Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger is reportedly facing new criticisms after the club's £52 million double signing of defender Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia and forward Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna.

The 66-year-old French boss had been drawing some flak again during this summer's transfer window for not being willing to spend on the team's transfer targets. The Gunners have missed their opportunities to sign Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez as well as Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi as their bids were all turned down by the three players' mother clubs.

Wenger had also missed signing Ligue 1 top goalscorer Alexandre Lacazette over negotiations on his release clause with Lyon. Meanwhile, their shoddy bid for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski had been immediately turned down by the Bundesliga champions as well.

Arsenal is currently in need of a center back and striker to reinforce their injury-plagued squad as most of Wenger first-team choices are sidelined by separate injuries.

Finally, reports were circling that Wenger was able to spend £52 million in the acquisitions of Mustafi and Perez, with the official announcements set to be made within the week on or before Wednesday's deadline, but he is still receiving criticisms of "panic buying" because of it.

Caught Offside reported that the Frenchman has "insisted that he isn't panic buying this week amid pressure from supporters to spend money and strengthen the squad".

The scrutiny seemed to be unending from the Gunners' faithful as they questioned whether Wenger is panic buying or not and that the large amount of money the team eventually spent on their two new signings may have been better spent on their previous targets or even future aims in the winter.

"Look at my face. Am I the face of somebody who does a panic buy?" Wenger asked reporters during a recent interview, as per the Daily Express. "I am happy when our supporters are happy but my focus is on strengthening the squad in the right way. If you look at the last season for example, it is not necessarily the club who bought the most that is in front."

"It is my job to make the right decisions for the team and the club. At the end of the season you will see if I made it," the coach said.
