The newest version of the Android mobile operating system, dubbed as Nougat, is expected to be released within the next few months, and with it is a new Nexus smartphone.

Google has kept its silence regarding the status of its newest Nexus device, but a handful of leaks have given the tech community indications of what it might look like and what's under the hood. The latest leak to surface reveals a photo showing the external build of the 2016 Nexus smartphone, along with a handful of new design twists.

The design of the Nexus smartphones have varied over the years, depending on the company who manufactured the specific model. Based on the recent leaks, it appears that Google and its partners might be looking to go with a unifying design for the two upcoming smartphones. While the two upcoming smartphone are expected to look the same, the main difference between the two are those under the hood, according to Slash Gear. Much like what Apple is doing with its iPhone 6s, and 6s Plus.

Dubbed only as the Sailfish and the Marlin, not much is known about the two upcoming Nexus devices. There are some rumors claiming that the two smartphone models will be manufactured by HTC. According to Android Police, the two smartphone will differ in screen size, battery capacity, and resolution.

If the recently leaked photos are really those of the 2016 Nexus smartphones, it means that the upcoming flagship devices will sport a metal build. On the top left section of the phone's rear part is where the camera sensor is located. A little lower, on the middle part, is where the circular fingerprint scanner sits.

Regarding the screen size, the Sailfish is expected to have a smaller 5-inch display, while the Marlin is expected to have a 5.5-inch display size. Compared to previously leaked photos, the two new ones show no sign of the "G" Google logo anywhere on their body.
