During the closing ceremony of the 2016 The International tournament, "DOTA 2" developer and publisher Valve reveals the game's newest and completely original hero named the Monkey King.

The Monkey King is the first original "DOTA 2" hero, this means that the character is not ported from the original "Defense of the Ancients" mod created for the "Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos" game. The character is based on the hero Sun Wukong from the Chinese novel "Journey To The West."

Although the Monkey King is a relative new hero in the "DOTA 2" universe, ardent fans of the game will know that there are certain references to this hero which have been included in the game over the years. An in-game item called Monkey King Bar, which grants True Strike, is a reference to the weapon used by the Monkey King. Valve released a teaser trailer of the new character on YouTube, and on the trailer the Monkey King uses his legendary stick weapon. The video can be accessed below.

According to IGN, Valve, back in 2014, had already expressed its intention to create a new roster of heroes for "DOTA 2" once the game has reached to original number of "DOTA" hero rosters. Moreover, there are rumors being tossed over several "DOTA 2" communities claiming that the Monkey King hero was first considered by developers to be added to the original "DOTA" lineup, but was not pushed through.

On similar news, the annual "DOTA 2" The International tournament was recently concluded and raised a new champion, Wings Gaming which hailed from China. The team eliminated defending champions Evil Geniuses during the upper bracket finals. Evil Geniuses was eventually ousted by Digital Chaos in the lower bracket to face, and eventually loss, Wings Gaming in the championships. Wings Gaming went home with the winners share of the $20 million prize pool, according to Polygon.
