"World War Z" might still have a sequel as lead actor and producer Brad Pitt is said to be in talks with "Gone Girl" director David Fincher to helm the project.

According to the sources of The Hollywood Reporter, Pitt, along with production company Skydance and distributor Paramount Pictures, met with Fincher to direct the sequel. The director is said to be open to the idea, something that the report says is quite surprising since he has been known to handle new stories or adaptations that are not mainstream.

Variety adds that Pitt has met with several directors and that the meeting with Fincher happened two weeks ago. The talks were said to be initially lukewarm, but the publication's sources reportedly said that their negotiations have now gone further than with other directors.

"World War Z" was a massive hit, raking in $540 million in the worldwide box office against as $190 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. There were initially reports that it would be a trilogy but that did not materialize.  Director Juan Antonio Bayona was then tapped to direct the second movie but dropped the project and will instead work on the yet untitled "Jurassic World" sequel.

Apart from "Gone Girl," the movies under Fincher's belt include the psychological thriller "Se7en," the alter-ego/metaphorical film "Fight Club," and the romantic fantasy drama "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," all three starring Pitt. He is also noted for directing "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" "Alien 3," and "The Social Network."

It is also said that Fincher is tired of doing sequels after "Alien 3," but he and Pitt almost collaborated on the reboot of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

An earlier report by THR said that the second "World War Z" movie is scheduled to be released in June 2017.
