‘Death Note’ casts Willem Dafoe to voice Ryuk The Shinigami

"Death Note" live-action adaptation found its Ryuk in the person of Willem Dafoe. The Oscar-nominated actor is the latest star to join the cast following Nat Wolff and Margaret Qualley.

Dafoe joined the cast of Adam Wingard adaptation of "Death Note," according to an exclusive report of Mashable. He will be joining Nat Wolff alongside Margaret Qualley, Keith Stanfield, Paul Nakauchi and Shea Whigham, and will render his voice for the main character Ryuk the Shinigami or the God of Death.

Dafoe closed the deal with Netflix while filming the highly anticipated "Justice League," in which he portrays Nuidis Vulko. Vulko is a key character in the Aquaman comics as he is the science advisor of Atlantis.

"Death Note" is not Dafoe's first voice acting stint, Screenrant noted. In fact, he rendered his voice to animated films like "Finding Nemo" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox." Additionally, he is popularly known as the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" film.

"Death Note" was first announced to be adapted into English in 2011. Warner Bro. Pictures was first in-charge of the project, and later was passed on to Netflix. Since then, fans have seen significant progress in the adaptation of the popular manga series.

"Death Note" follows the story of a high school student (Wolff) who came across a magical notebook, which gives him the ability to kill anyone by simply writing their name on the notebook. The conflict begins when he begins killing everyone who seems unworthy of life.

"Death Note" is a famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Meanwhile, Roy Lee and Dan Lin will be producing the film alongside Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka. "Death Note" will debut on Netflix in 2017.
