After months of speculations, HBO has finally confirmed that hit series "Game of Thrones" is ending after airing its forthcoming eight season. However, the cable network said that they are not dismissing the idea to do a spinoff of the franchise.

HBO confirmed at the Television Critics Association press tour that the hit fantasy series will conclude after Season 8 - the news was announced by HBO programming president Casey Bloys.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Bloys was asked whether he's on board with "Game of Thrones" showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss' plan to end the series after Season 8, wherein he replied with a "yes." Bloys explained that Benioff and Weiss have a "very specific plan" about how many seasons "Game of Thrones" will be on air.

"Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more," Bloys continued.

"I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show."

Just like the upcoming seventh season, "Game of Thrones" Season 8 is also being planned to run with an abbreviated number of episodes. However, although the writers are planning to setup the final season with merely six episodes, Bloys said that their initial plan is not yet final.

Even though "Game of Thrones" is ending soon, fans should not lose hope just yet. Bloys said that a potential spinoff of the franchise is being considered, Deadline reported.

"We've talked about it," he said.

"It's something I'm not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively."

"Game of Thrones" Season 7 premieres in the summer of 2017 on HBO.
