A new restaurant with an Orange is the New Black theme is heading to Singapore. The restaurant is a recreation of the show's Litchfield Penitentiary cafeteria.
A popular online reservation website has a blurb about the restaurant that reads, "Come meet your fellow inmates, wait in line and stay hydrated with a tall plastic cup of our refreshing house beverage: water. The lunch-mates you'll make here can make or break your stay, so choose your seat wisely."
The prison-themed cafeteria is set to open its doors on June 16 and June 17, just in time for the upcoming season four premier of Orange is the New Black on Netflix. The unique restaurant is the brainchild of Singaporean restaurateur Bjorn Shen who owns three restaurants in the city-state.
Staying true to the theme of Orange is the New Black, Shen's upcoming restaurant will serve the NutraLoaf, the chef's version of the disciplinary dish served only for some of the show's most reviled prisoners. However, unlike what most people would assume a prison food is, NutraLoaf is made of cheddar, mushrooms, pumpkin, quinoa, seaweed, and truffle oil.
Shen's version of NutraLoaf is significantly better compared to the real ones served in prisons which food critic Jeff Ruby once described as "a thick orange lump of spite with the density and taste of a dumbbell, (that) could only be the object of Beelzebub's culinary desires."
For the side dish, Shen has his version of frozen corn kernels made of cheese, jalapenos, lime, and spiced butter. The dessert is also nothing like those served in prison as Shen is serving white chocolate and coconut rice pudding with almond crumble as toppings.
In related news, Orange is the New Black will debut its fourth season on Netflix on June 17.
