Following the massive success of Descendants of the Sun, the show will reportedly return with season one supporting actors Jin Goo and Kim Ji Won taking the lead roles, according to rumors. Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo are unlikely to appear in the second season because of their hectic schedule.

According to Yibada, the story will be shifted to focus on Sergeant Major Seo Dae Young (Jin Goo) and Lieutenant Yoon Myung Joo (Kim Ji Won). However, unlike the Song-Song love team who are continued to be hounded by real-life romance rumors, the case is less likely to happen to upcoming next lead stars as Jin Goo is happily married and has a child.

Soompi reported in April that KBS is in talks to come up with a second season to thank its fans for their undying support.

"We want to repay viewers with the next 'Descendants of the Sun,'" Jung Sung Ho, head of KBS' drama department, said. "The drama was more than a domestic syndrome; it established a third wave of Hallyu."

"KBS will strive to produce 'Descendants of the Sun' to meet expectations and repay viewers," Jung added. "We plan to launch a 2017 'Descendants of the Sun' project for broadcast in 2017 through negotiations with the cast and production team."

Meanwhile, the mega-hit Korean series bagged the grand prize in the television category during the 52nd Baeksang Arts Awards on Friday, June 3 at the Kyung Hee University's Grand Peace Hall in Seoul. The Song-Song couple also took home the Male and Female Popularity Awards as well as the iQiyi Global Star Awards.
