"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will not feature Thanos, according to film director James Gunn. He said the film focuses on his daughters Gamora and Nebula's relationship, so Thanos' presence is not necessary.

It is understandable for fans to expect Thanos to be in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." After all, his daughters are two of the important characters in the movie. Likewise, the Marvel character appeared in the first film, so it is likely that viewers would expect to see him return for the sequel.

However, Gunn said the Mad Titan will not be in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" since he is not part of the story. The director said the film focuses on Gamora and Nebula's relationship, which does not have to involve Thanos.

"It's not about the sisters and their father. It's about two sisters, and what were the sisters' problems with each other," Gunn told Cinema Blend.

Gunn reiterated that the movie does not revolve around the sisters' problems with their father. Simply put, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is not about Thanos, although he may seem like the central character in the first film.

Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, already revealed in a previous interview that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" explores the sisters' relationship. She previously told The Wrap that it immediately delves into Nebula's connection with her sister Gamora (Zoe Saldana). The actress teased that fans might even sympathize with her when they learn about her bad history with Thanos.

However, now with Thanos missing, who become the main villains in the sequel? Gunn said he opted to make newcomer Ayesha and the Ravagers as the Guardians' nemesis. Ayesha made her debut in the second "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" trailer released during the Super Bowl.
