"Lion" star Nicole Kidman is in early talks to join "Justice League" actor Jason Mamoa in the Warner Bros.' "Aquaman." She may be joining the DC Cinematic Universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kidman will play the titular character's mother Atlanna in the big-screen take of the underwater-breathing comic book superhero "Aquaman." Mamoa is playing the title character. "The Get Down" actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is also in early talks to play the villain known as Black Manta.

"Aquaman" is based on the DC Comics character, who is the king of Atlantis, born half-human as Arthur Curry and half-Atlantean. His mother Atlanna has escaped the underwater kingdom Atlantis and had a son with a lighthouse keeper, Variety reported. She gave birth to the boy, who will one day grow up to be a bridge between two worlds.

Joining Kidman in "Aquaman" stars "Drive Angry" actress Amber Heard (Aquaman's royal love interest Mera) and "Spider-Man" actor Willem Dafoe (Aquaman's science advisor Dr. Vulko). "Conjuring" actor Patrick Wilson will also play a villain Orm, who happens to be Aquaman's half-brother.

"MacGyver" helmer James Wan is directing the superhero film "Aquaman" with Peter Safran producing. Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, and Rob Cowan are executive producing.

If a deal is made, "Aquaman" will not be Kidman's first swim in the DC superhero waters. She starred in 1995's "Batman Forever" as Dr. Chase Meridian, who is the love interest of Val Kilmer's character Bruce Wayne.

Kidman was nominated for an Academy Award in the best-supporting actress category for her work in the Weinstein Co. drama "Lion," which is about an adopted man looking for her family. She is also starring in and executive producing HBO's dramatic miniseries "Big Little Lies," which is set to premiere this month. She is represented by CAA, Shanahan Management, and Media Talent Group.

Warner Bros. has set an Oct. 5, 2018, release date for "Aquaman." It is planning to start production in April in Australia.
