The colorful, comedic world of "Archie Comics" was given a grittier, edgier and darker flavor in The CW's "Riverdale." The show, which is named after the town where the stories in the comics take place, makes drastic changes to the iconic characters to give their story a modern, more relatable update. Here are some of the characters that saw the most changes from the comic books to the TV screen.
Geraldine Grundy
When fans hear Miss Grundy's name the picture that comes to mind is that of an old woman with grey hair all wrapped in a bun. On the contrary, the "Riverdale" version of Miss Grundy takes years out of the character's age as she appears as a hot, young music teacher that develops a salacious affair with her student, Archie Andrews. Movie Pilot even notes that Miss Grundy and Archie's sexual encounter is considered statutory rape, but the show paints this as a sexual fantasy instead of being a serious crime.
Jughead Jones
Jughead is one of the more prominent characters in "Archie Comics" and is often portrayed as a rather carefree guy who has a weakness for food, especially burgers. This isn't the case for Cole Sprouse's portrayal of the character. In "Riverdale," Jughead is a brooding outsider who narrates the events in town as he writes his own novel. The things that best define Jughead are gone: his floppy crown, "S" sweater and huge appetite.
Alice Cooper
Betty's mom in the comics would probably win the Most Ideal Best Mom award. She was caring and very motherly, unlike her onscreen counterpart who's very controlling and uptight. In the pilot episode of "Riverdale," Alice forces Betty into becoming the perfect daughter after things spiral down for her eldest daughter, Polly. She also gives Betty Adderall to help her focus on her studies and discourages her from being friends with Archie and Veronica.
Veronica Lodge
Veronica as "Archie Comics" loyalist would know is a vain, rich kid who is insanely obsessed with Archiekins. In "Riverdale," Veronica is almost the exact opposite. Although she's still rich, she no longer has her unpleasant traits. She's generally nice to everyone and even stands up for Betty when the latter gets bullied. What's more, she doesn't seem to want to be in a tug of war with Betty over Archie.
"Now she's gone through this traumatic event - having her father being arrested for fraud on a very public level - and having that bring shame to her life. It's completely humbled her," actress Camila Mendes tells Teen Vogue about her character's drastic reboot.
