Cher is set to star and produce the Lifetime's TV movie "Flint" about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. She is headed to Lifetime.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the iconic singer-actress has been tapped to star in "Flint." She will play a Flint resident whose family is impacted by the Michigan town's water crisis. She will executive produce alongside "Hairspray Live!" producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, as well as Katie Couric.

For Cher, "Flint" would mark her first dramatic TV role in two decades and second TV movie role, since HBO's 1996 abortion-rights movie "If These Walls Could Talk," which earned her a Golden Globe nomination, TV Line reported. The latter movie dealt with the right to choose and abortion.

However, the "Flint" water crisis is a cause dear to Cher's heart, for which she has been actively involved in helping Flint residents, including donating thousands of water bottles. She reportedly reached out to producers and asked if she could be a part of the film.

"Driving Miss Daisy" helmer and Oscar-nominated Bruce Beresford is slated to direct "Flint" from Sony Pictures Television. Barbara Stepansky will pen the script. Zadan and Meron's Sony Pictures TV-based Storyline Entertainment optioned the rights to the story and Sony TV as the studio.

The hard-hitting fact-based "Flint" drama has been in fast track development since Lifetime brought it last April. It is based on events in Flint about the poor management that led to water poisoning as well as the human elements of the residents who suffered and whose voices were ignored. A February 1, 2016, cover story in Time magazine called "The Toxic Tap," written by Josh Sanburn, was the inspiration.

Cher played herself on "Will & Grace" and served as a mentor on "The Voice." She won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in "Moonstruck" and was Oscar-nominated for her co-starring role with Meryl Streep in "Silkwood."

"Flint" does not have a formal greenlight yet but is expected to go into production in the spring.
