Netflix on Sunday has officially renewed "Luke Cage" for a second season.

The pickup was announced on the show's official Twitter account, which teases that the sophomore season of the superhero series is "Coming Soon." No release date has been set, but it's likely that it will debut sometime in 2018.

Plot details and cast additions are expected to be announced on a later date.

"Luke Cage" stars Mike Colter as the titular character who is an ex-cop framed for a crime he didn't commit, then transitions into Harlem's bulletproof crimefighter. The series also stars Rosario Dawson, Mahershala Ali, Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, and Alfre Woodard.

Marvel first introduced Luke Cage in the first season of "Jessica Jones," where he played as the lead's love interest. The character is also set to play a pivotal role on the upcoming "The Defenders," a miniseries which will mash up the superheroes of Marvel's Netflix-verse including "Luke Cage," "Jessica Jones," "Daredevil" and "Iron Fist." It will debut sometime in 2017 on the streaming network, following Iron Fist's launch on March 17.

"Luke Cage" season one was well-received by both critics and fans, praising the performance of the whole ensemble as well as the representation of hip-hop music and culture featured in each episode.

The way that the show depicted Black Lives Matter as a socially relevant issue was also given recognition. However, star Mike Colter explained that this isn't the message the show is trying to tell.

"Nobody wants to have this agenda being a political show. You're trying to entertain people using a comic book," Colter told The Independent in October.

"This is not a Black Lives Matter story, but it kind of still is. Whether you like it or not, you have to let the public decide. You can have all the intentions you want and try and guide the narrative, but the narrative is irrelevant because it's how the public digests it that will be indicative of what the series will ultimately be."
