"Mad Max: Fury Road" star Tom Hardy is set to play infamous mobster Al Capone in the upcoming film 'Fonzo.' The biographical film early days of Al Capone to how he came to reign as a crime boss during the Prohibition era and his life a decade after his imprisonment.
"Fonzo" adds another major role booked by Hardy after starring in 5 films in 2015. This is not the first time that Hardy will play a gangster leader. Previously, he starred as the Kray twins in the British biopic "Legend," The Hollywood Reporter reported. His next feature will be in Christopher Nolan's historical war drama "Dunkirk" with Kenneth Branagh and Cillian Murphy.
Capone's rise and fall had been explored over the years in several films since the 1930s. He had been tagged to be a "modern-day Robin Hood" in his prime until his popularity waned after the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre of gang rivals that resulted to the killing of seven men in broad day light.
He was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison. After his conviction, he was already showing signs of symphilitic dementia and became increasingly debilitated before his release, Screen Rant reported. On January 25, 1947, he died of cardiac arrest after suffering a stroke.
The project will be directed by "Fantastic Four" and "Chronicle" director Josh Trank. The film will be produced by Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder and Oscar-nominated Lawrence Bender. The project to set to go to pre-production and will be introduced to buyers at the AFM.
