It was a heartbreaking "The Walking Dead" Season 7 premiere as viewers bid goodbye to fan favorite Glenn Rhee, played by actor Steven Yeun.

In "The Walking Dead" Season 7 premiere, Glenn was one of Negan's two victims, the other being Abraham. Both characters were beaten to death using Neegan's baseball bat named Lucille.

Glenn's death was a long time coming for "The Walking Dead," especially for those who followed the comics from which the AMC series is based. How Glenn died in the show is exactly how dead died in the comics, with his head smashed into mush. Even with this knowledge at hand, viewers still found themselves emotional about the death of the well-loved character.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking thing about Glenn's death was that it was done in front of his wife Maggie. His last words to the love of his life left many fans in tears, and some wondered what it all meant.

"Glenn was fighting to find words and 'Maggie, I'll find you' was a callback to another experience and another time when he really was trying to find her," Yeun explained on Sunday's episode of "Talking Dead," TVLine reported. "Maybe it was a subconscious thought or maybe something he held onto for a while that was his driving force, and when he got smashed in the head, it just brought it to the forefront. There are so many ways to look at it."

In recall, Maggie and Glenn were separated in Season 4, during which he made it his mission to find her. "I'll find you," became a mantra of sorts for Glenn. Somehow, it also felt like a promise that resonates for the couple throughout eternity.

Neegan's killing scene, however, didn't sit well with some viewers who called it too violent for television. Although viewers have been immune to seeing characters getting killed or eaten alive throughout the show, the Season 7 premiere was particularly traumatizing for some.

According to TIME, the Parents Television Council called out the show for being "one of the most graphically violent shows" ever aired on television, as compared to other violent programs on premium cable networks.

Yeun's Glenn holds a very special place in the hearts of many "The Walking Dead" fans as he was one of the most likeable and most dependable characters on the show. The good-natured guy made his debut in Season 1, when he went out of his way to save Rick.
