FX's upcoming X-Men series "Legion" will tie up with future films in the "X-Men" movie franchise, the show's creators confirm.
"Legion," which centers on Dan Stevens' David Haller, and a still-untitled Fox series are part of the massive silver screen "X-Men" universe. At the Edinburgh Television Festival, director Bryan singer and 21st Century's Fox Network Group CEO Peter Rice discussed "Legion" and how it is going to relate to the "X-Men" movies.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Singer stated that "Legion" will "relate to future X-Men movies." He added that while it is designed to become part and parcel of the bigger picture, "Legion" could still exist "completely on its own."
Singer described the storyline for "Legion" as "really ambitious and fun and very unique."
This is a surprising development for major superhero franchises, especially since they usually make it a point to separate the events in the movies from those in television. Such as in DC's Extended Universe, the movie and television timelines and plots are not congruent.
FX's "Legion" tells the story of David Haller, a schizophrenic who's been struggling with mental illness ever since he was a teenager. He has been in an out of psychiatric hospitals all his life. However, a strange encounter with a fellow patient changes how David sees things as he faces the possibility that the voices he hears and the vision he sees might all be real.
Fans of the comic books know David as the son of Professor Charles Xavier. He is an Omega-level mutant, and is regarded by many as one of the most powerful to ever exist. He possesses a vast number of mutant abilities such as telekinesis to reality warping. Due to David's schizophrenia, each of his powers is controlled by a different person, which also makes him a threat.
"Downton Abbey" actor Dan Stevens is leading the cast, Marvel reported. Joining him are Aubrey Plaza, Jean Smart and Rachel Keller, to name a few. Running the show is "Fargo" producer Noah Hawley.
"Legion" is expected to premiere in 2017.
