Video streaming giant Netflix announced that its original new series "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" will be available to its subscribers on Jan. 13, 2017.

According to Variety, the new series is topbilled by "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris who just concluded his NBC variety show "Best Time Ever".

It is a television adaptation of the internationally best-selling series of books by Lemony Snicket which recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans - Violet, Klaus and Sunny - whose evil guardian, Count Olaf, will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. Harris will play the role of Count Olaf.

The series also stars Patrick Warburton as the narrator Lemony Snicket, Joan Cusack as Justice Strauss, Malina Weissman as Violet Baudelaire and Louis Hynes as Klaus Baudelaire. This Netflix original production is comprised of eight episodes and executive produced by Barry Sonnenfeld and Daniel Handler.

In a report by Screen Rant, the addition of "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" whould only further allow Netflix to diversify its original programming library, amassing quite the eclectic and varied collection of original series so as to better appeal to a wider range of tastes and interests, with respect to its subscribers.

In the new teaser trailer released by Netflix, narrator Patrick Warburton playing Lemony Snicket, urged the viewers to avoid the "cruel whimsy and whimsical cruelty of what's to come" on the series. While he did not appear on screen, Neil Patrick Harris' demented voice and laugh can be heard from off screen.

Not a children's book about rainbows and unicorns, "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" is known for its darkly wry humor and take on young adult or coming of age narratives. But the big screen adaptation of the novel soften the dark and unpleasant elements that fans originally loved.

As the film version was not that of a big hit to warrant a second installment, it could be expected that Netflix would avoid the same mistake. So fans can safely expect a darker tone for the series to which the novels were known for.
