More and more news on the upcoming live movie adaptation of Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed" franchise have been surfacing. Previous news involved Michael Fassbender as the protagonist Callum Lynch/Aguilar, the setting to be in 15th century Spain, and actors speaking in Spanish during the historical sequences. Now, director Justin Kurzel reveals more on the character Maria.

Playing the role of Maria is "The Lobster" actress Ariane Labed. According to a Q & A Live in GamesRadar's official Facebook, Kurzel mentioned that the Maria is a completely invented character for the movie. She and Aguilar both belong to the 15th century Spanish branch of the Creed and have a "brother/sister" relationship with one another.

The director mentioned that the character isn't just the typical love interest or for show as a "side placement to the male lead." He added that Maria is a real warrior, who's strong and "has very fundamental ideas."  In fact, the actress Ariane Labed did most of the action sequences herself.

"It's someone who's actually integral to the drama that unfolds but also the journey that the Creed takes in the past," said Kurzel.

Previously, the "Assassin's Creed" director mentioned that the movie will be set 65 percent in the modern times and 35 percent in the 15th century Spain. To make the historical scenes authentic, the actors will be fluently speaking in Spanish, a trait that the games never ventured into.

Gamespot mentions that the director is open to the possibilities of sequels, partially due to the franchise's fictional technology called the Animus, which lets people relive any of their ancestor's memories. Kurzel also added, though, that he would have wait and see on how people will "embrace" this movie first, hence any plans for a sequel will be put on hold for the time being.

Movie studios Fox and New Regency already are planning to make the "Assassin's Creed" movies a franchise, in which actor Michael Fassbender is said to be interested to join in.

Kurzel has admitted that he wasn't able to witness the bad track record most video game movies have in the movie industry. Ubisoft hopes that the "Assassin's Creed" movie will break away from that trend of mediocrity.

"Assassin's Creed" will hit theaters on Dec. 21.
