Game of Thrones co-creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have given a hint of what fans can expect from the hit HBO series following Sunday's record-breaking season finale.
The 69-minute episode "The Winds of Winter" which unraveled a massive explosion plotted by Cersei, also gave fans another clue about Jon Snow's parentage.
One of the crucial plots that unfolded in the finale was Cersei's revenge, an event which pushed her last heir to commit suicide. According to co-creator D.B. Weiss, Season 7 will be mostly about how Cersei will move forward after this loss.
"While Cersei has certainly done a lot of horrible things in her life and she could be a very cruel person, the one thing that was redemptive about her was that she genuinely loved her children," Weiss told Deadline in an interview. "Now they're all gone, and I think that is very interesting for us. Who is she without her children? The answer is something you'll find out next season. That's so much of what is to come that I'll just give it away if I start delving into it now."
Game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff has revealed that they there will be two more seasons of the show.
"We're trying to tell one cohesive story with a beginning, middle and end," he said. "Those last images from the show that aired last night showed that. Daenerys is finally coming back to Westeros; Jon Snow is king of the North and Cersei is sitting on the Iron Throne. And we know the Night King is up there, waiting for all of them."
Season 6 was the first time that Weiss and Benioff wrote the script for Game of Thrones without basing it on George R.R. Martin's novels. Despite this, the duo already mapped out the ending of the series.
"We've known the end for quite some time, and we're hurtling towards it," Benioff revealed. "The pieces are on the board now. Some of the pieces have been removed from the board, and we are heading toward the end game."
Game of Thrones continues to be a record breaker for HBO, with Sunday's finale setting a new high for the series. "The Winds of Winter" was watched by 8.9 million viewers, surpassing Season 5's finale, which attracted a total of 8.1 million viewers.
