Hugh Jackman will not wear Wolverine's iconic gold and brown costume in "Logan." The latest trailer for the sequel iterated this, which director James Mangold has since confirmed in past interviews.
20th Century Fox has released a brand new look at "Logan," which focuses on X-23 (Laura Kinney). However, a scene in the preview finally answers questions whether Jackman will suit up as his comicbook counterpart in the movie.
This scene in the trailer shows Logan browsing through pages of an "X-Men" comicbook. He looked at pages of Wolverine garbed in his yellow and blue suit, before he says, "not like this." According to Comicbook, this line is confirmation already that fans will never see the clawed mutant in any costume for that matter (see scene below at the 0:37 time mark).
Film director James Mangold has one very good reason why he does not want Jackman to wear the iconic Wolverine suit in "Logan." He said the costume does not match the character's personality. Wolverine does not want to labelled as a superhero and putting him in costume defeats this purpose.
Mangold said that Jackman's Wolverine is not a showoff. He is the type who "disdains self promotion" and having him wear the gold and brown costume would only promote himself as some kind of hero.
"The flesh and blood character is very loyal to that iconoclastic rebel who doesn't seem to be the first to don spandex. Some fans may be frustrated, but we're trying to be true to his character," Mangold told Comic Book Resources.
Regardless, this would not be the first time that Jackman did not suit up in any kind of costume as Wolverine. The past movie franchise either had him wear plain clothes or stripped chest naked. "Logan" is no different, after all, as what Mangold said, the costume is not the focus in the story. Instead, the film centers on Wolverine's relationships to other characters.
