The CW Television Network's supernatural drama "The Vampire Diaries" is approaching its eighth season, and show creator Julie Plec is aiming to have the original cast return for the final run. This could mean the return of actress Nina Dobrev, who left the series after Season 6.

"I will say that at some point over the course of this season, I would like to see everyone's face that I can possibly see again, whether it be in the finale or in flashbacks or the characters who are still alive finding their way through Mystic Falls one last time," Plec told Entertainment Weekly.

She added she would be "really disappointed" if she is not able to feature the characters for the last time.

The network is also supportive of Plec's aim of bringing the characters back, especially Dobrev. During the recent Television Critics Association Press tour, The CW's president Mark Pedowitz said that there are ongoing discussions with the actress and that they would love to bring her back.  EW quotes him as saying that they would want to have her in as many episodes that Plec would deem necessary. He went on to give Dobrev praises.

According to Teen Vogue, the series finale of "The Vampire Diaries" will go on flash forward. Will Elena Gilbert (Dobrev) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) finally have their happily ever after?

But even if the negotiations do not work out, Pedowitz believes that Plec will give the show "a really satisfactory series finale." Fans can expect that the last season of the series will give closure to the characters and their respective storylines. Apart from Damon, these include Stefan (Paul Wesley), Bonnie (Kat Graham), Caroline (Candice King), Matt (Zach Roerig), Alaric (Matt Davis), and Enzo (Michael Malarkey).

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 will premiere on Friday, Oct. 21, with the episode titled "Hello Brother." It will have 16 episodes.
