Recent NBA rumors have emerged that three-point shooting king Ray Allen is only desiring an NBA comeback because he wants to extend his three-point record lead over reigning MVP Stephen Curry.
At the moment, the 41-year-old two-time NBA champion is the NBA's all-time three-point leader with 2,973 three-point shots made in his so far 18-year career while Reggie Miller and Jason Terry are second and third with 2,560 and 2,169 respectively. Curry is still a long way at 19th place in the list with 1,593 in seven seasons.
However, at the rate he is dropping those long bombs per season, the Golden State Warrior point guard will soon overtake all the legends, including Allen, when it comes to beating the record.
Allen last played in 2013-2014 for Miami and after sitting out two seasons is reportedly eyeing an NBA return for a still unnamed team. He has been linked to the Warriors and reigning champions Cleveland Cavaliers this summer while he told reporters in recent interviews that he is open to rejoining his old teams Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks if an opportunity arises, as per The Score's Chris Walder.
Walder then mentioned that "beyond adding another title to his resume, Allen reportedly seeks to hit the hardwood once again to create more breathing room between himself and" Curry, who already has more than half of the three-pointers he made in 18 seasons.
The report also cited Boston Globe's Gary Washburn as saying that "Ray wants to play again. I'm sure about that. I don't think he particularly enjoys watching Stephen Curry rain threes and challenge his record and be called the best shooter in the world. I think that bothers him. I know Ray wants to extend his all-time 3-point record."
Larry Brown Sports noted that "if Curry can remain healthy and his skills don't decline dramatically, he should surpass Allen in about six more seasons".
Curry would be 34 years old by then and one could just assume his rate per season of dropping three-pointers may have slightly declined, but still Allen's record is quite reachable for the two-time MVP's standards.
The three-time NBA All-Star broke his own single-season three-point record of 290 three-point shots by dropping 402 threes last season.
