Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie, is one of the most anticipated characters in "Suicide Squad." The costume designer for the show Kate Hawley took to social media to share how the team prepared for Harley Quinn's costume. She mentioned how looking at the Instagram accounts of drug lords and famous punk-rock icons have helped her with the design concept.

Hawley, according to Batman News, said that fans were excited to see how Robbie would bring the comic book character to life. She revealed that the team had to select from different variations and go through several revisions in order to finalize a costume for Harley Quinn.

The first outfit featured a ragged shirt with an orange jumpsuit on the floor which made it look like an alternate prison outfit. Movie Pilot suggests that the team might have added a few changes but retained the design of the prison suit Harley Quinn was wearing in "Arkham Knight."They retained her thigh tattoos, and she was without pants.

The second maintained the red and blue color scheme which was more in tune with the comic version of Harley Quinn in "New 52." The team placed her tattoo on a different location and tweaked the design a little. She also has a gun that is strapped to her thighs. The "J" that hangs off her top is presumed to signify her devotion to the Joker.

The final costume of Harley Quinn in the movie is a combination of the two concepts. She wears a ratty outfit underneath her blue and red jacket, while also sporting the same hair color. Hawley said that it was partly inspired by the comic book and party by pictures of Mexican drug lords. She also said that she drew inspiration from the outfits of famous rock and roll icons like Patti Smith and Courtney Love. This explains why the characters' make-up bare resemblance to the punk rock icons that the designer mentioned.
