"Avatar" is confirmed to have a sequel after seven years, but unfortunately, Fox announced that "Avatar 2" will be pushed back again for another year. The probable reason can be traced to Cameron's decision to give way to the "Star Wars" franchise. To make up for the long wait, he announces his plans of making four more sequels of the film.

Cameron told The Wrap that he originally planned to release "Avatar 2" a year apart from the first, but that changed since he did not want to contend with the release of the "Star Wars" sequels. He said that he did not want to go head to head with the franchise the same way as he did not want them to do so as well. The same source suggests that the first installment had won over "Star Wars" on the global box office hit, but in spite of this, the director still did not want to challenge them out of respect for good business.

The long delay of "Avatar 2" was met with a lot of disappointed fans, but Cameron ensured that he would be giving more than what is expected. He revealed via The Hollywood Reporter that he was planning on making four "Avatar" sequels, instead of the originally planned three. He thought it would be best to better tell the whole story by expanding and adding additional installments. He mentioned that they were embarking in a huge cinematic process that they needed time to prepare and address the challenges in their art form.

He also said the sequels would serve as standalone films but would create an epic saga altogether. He teased that the art form in "Avatar 2" and all succeeding sequels would be far more than the first "Avatar" film and would surprise fans beyond their imagination.

"Avatar 2"  is planned to be released on December 2018.
