Despite his hectic fan meeting schedule as part of his Asian tour, Descendants of the Sun heartthrob Song Joong-ki is starting to lose weight in preparation for his upcoming movie.

The 30-year-old actor is reportedly exercising and stringently following a diet plan for his role as Park Mu Young for his film Battleship Island,  which will be shot in Nami, Chuncheon, Gangwon Province.

During the Hallyu star's press conference in Hong Kong, Song explained that he is shedding off some pounds as "the film is taken from a true story that inserts background of Korean history, I had to look thin to customize my character more than 10 years ago."

The Korean actor admitted that going on a diet is challenging because of many temptations. He noted that the arrival of his special guest Lee Kwang Soo for the Hong Kong leg of his tour might further tempt him to feast on the country's delicacies.

Song's upcoming movie Battleship Island will also be starring Hwang Jing Min as Lee Kang Wook and So Ji Sub as Choi Chil-Sung. On June 2, the cast of the movie reportedly met at a secret location in Seoul to discuss the film and read through the script.

According to Yibada, the movie will reveal the unknown history of the 16-acre Hashima Island, which was known for its undersea coal mines. The film will tell the tale of around 400 Koreans who were forced to become laborers and later on desperately attempted to escape the island following brutal maltreatment from Japanese soldiers during the World War II.

The Ryo Seung Wan-directed film is set to be released early next year by CJ Entertainment.
