"Star Wars: Beyond" director Justin Lin has highlighted some specific ways that his upcoming film would differ from J.J. Abrams' versions.

In an interview with Collider, Lin explained how it would be distinct from its predecessors.

While the previous films were "bright and flashy," Lin pointed out that his was about "tonally." He said he "felt like the way to do it is to really kind of just trust your gut."

"You know, trust my gut in what I think, you know, why I love 'Star Trek.' So by doing that, a lot of it was just about, tonally," he added. "And it is very different than the other two. But it reflects kind of my chapter or my turn as a gatekeeper for this one."

Taking J.J. Abrams' advice to "Just take it over, and whatever you do, be bold," the new director really made sure that he took it "to heart," Lin said "I think that's been a great partnership. I'm in a place in my career where I don't have to do things just to do things."

"So it was really great to have that kind of, again, environment to work in where I could really explore and really just try things," he added.

Meanwhile, fans are calling for Asian-American actor John Cho, who plays Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu in "Star Trek: Beyond," to star as a leading man in different Hollywood romantic flicks.

The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that through the hashtag #StarringJohnCho, fans have been photoshopping the 43-year-old South Korea-born into the posters of various films.

In the Twitter campaign, the "Star Trek: Beyond" actor was seen, among others, in the posters of "Me Before You," "The Nice Guys" and "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation."

"The goal was to spark discussion and get people to question [themselves]," New York-based digital strategist William Yu said about the campaign."If you're laughing at John Cho as James Bond, why does that seem so outrageous?"

Catch John Cho and the rest of "Star Trek: Beyond" cast in theaters on July 22.
