After months of speculation, Korean star Gianna Jun of Assassination fame and Bounty Hunters actor Lee Min-Ho have officially been confirmed to feature together in a new Korean television series titled, The Legend of the Blue Sea.
Gianna, also known as Jun Ji-Hyun, and Lee, who shot to fame with his role in the series Boys over Flowers, will be making their television comeback with Blue Sea following a three-year hiatus.
The series will air on SBS every Wednesday and Thursday and is scheduled to hit television screens in November following the end of Incarnation of Envy.
The Korean TV drama will be directed by Jin Hyuk, who has previously worked with Lee on City Hunter. The series will be written by scriptwriter Park Ji-Eun, who also penned the 2013 blockbuster My Love from the Star, in which Jun played the female lead.
Legend of the Blue Sea is a fantasy romance that follows the story of a mermaid/merman and is inspired by Korea's first collection of historical tales. The Josean-era stories revolve around a human who returns mermaids and mermen caught by fisherman back to the sea.
Directed by Jin Hyuk, who previously made Lee-starring City Hunter, the new series will be written by Park Ji-eun, the scriptwriter of 2013 pan-Asian megahit My Love from the Star.
"The scriptwriter has thought Jun and Lee would be the perfect combination from the very beginning, and designed the characters for them. The actors also trusted the writer and the director so much that they confirmed their participation immediately," production company Culture Depot said in a statement.
"From the beginning stages, writer Park Ji Eun created characters matching Jun Ji Hyun and Lee Min Ho, thinking of them as the best couple. The lead actors also decided to work on the drama because they believe in the writer and the director. You can look forward to their chemistry, which will be beyond one's imagination," the company added.
