Fans of "The Big Bang Theory" are in for a sweet surprise. The spinoff project of the hit CBS sitcom has now found its young Sheldon Cooper.

Originally played by Jim Parsons, Deadline has learned that "Big Little Lies" actor Iain Armitage has landed the key role on The Big Bang Theory's spinoff series. The project, which is also co-produced by Parsons, is described as a prequel centering on the childhood days of the eccentric genius, Sheldon Cooper. He lives in Texas with his older brother George, fraternal twin sister (Missy), their mother Mary Cooper (Perry), an overtly devout Evangelical Christian; and father George Cooper, an alcoholic who was never around.

In addition to Armitage, producers of the spinoff have also cast Zoe Perry as the younger version of Mary. Perry's mother in real-life is Laurie Metcalf, the current portrayer of Mary on the original series. No word yet as to which actors will play the other family members of Sheldon.

Production for the spinoff is expected to begin soon, given that the show has already cast two of its key roles. Should CBS gives the show a series order, it's likely that fans will see the show make its debut this fall or midseason of 2018.

As for the original "Big Bang Theory," the top-rated series is currently facing a some renewal issues. According to a report from Variety, co-stars Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik are seeking higher pays for the show's potential 11th and 12th season. To this end, five of the show's core members: Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar, Simon Helberg and Johnny Galecki have offered to cut $100,000 off from their current salaries to donate to Rauch and Bialik.

No word yet if the duo have already finalized a deal with CBS and Warner Bros. TV.
