"Born to Be Blue" actor Ethan Hawke and "Prometheus" actress Noomi Rapace has signed on to star in the thriller "Stockholm." "Born to Be Blue" helmer Robert Budreau will direct and wrote the script.

Hawke and Rapace will play in undisclosed roles in "Stockholm." According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is based on the true story of the 1973 bank heist and the hostage crisis in Stockholm and was documented in the 1974 New Yorker article "The Bank Drama" written by Daniel Lang. It is about the hostages who bonded with their captors and turned against the authorities, giving rise to the psychological phenomenon known as "Stockholm Syndrome."

Nicholas Tabarrok will produce "Stockholm" via his Darius Films banner, with Budreau via his Lumanity banner, and Jonathan Bronfman via his JoBro Productions banner. Sierra/Affinity is handling international sales and will offer it to buyers for the first time at the 2017 European Film Market in Berlin at the Berlin Film Festival, Variety reported.

Scott Aversano and Will Russell-Shapiro will executive produce "Stockholm" and oversee it through the Aversano Films banner along with Jason Blum via Blumhouse Productions. William Santor, John Hills, and Andrew Chang-Sang are also executive producing for financier Productivity Media.

Budreau and Hawke are reuniting in "Stockholm" after working together on the biopic "Born to Be Blue," in which Hawke starred as jazz legend Chet Baker. Budreau is currently developing a TV series adaptation of the short story "Consumers" by Dennis Lehane. He is represented by APA and The Sanford Ehrlich Company.

Hawke received an Oscar nomination in 2015 for "Boyhood" and is represented by CAA, MGMT Entertainment, and lawyer George Sheanshang. Meanwhile, Rapace starred in the Swedish "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy and in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows." She is represented by CAA, Magnolia Entertainment, and attorney Howard Fishman of HWHM+F.

The production of "Stockholm" is slated for April.
