This is not a drill: Nina Dobrev is definitely returning to "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8. As promised, the leading lady of the supernatural-themed drama is making her grand comeback to Mystic Falls as the show wraps up its final season.

"TVD" executive producer Kevin Williamson shared a photo with Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley on the set of Season 8 finale. However, Dobrev's ex, co-star Ian Somerhalder, was not included in the photograph.

"I'm thrilled to bring this show to an end the way we always intended - with Nina back to help us say goodbye," executive producer Julie Plec said, as quoted by TVLine. Prior to production, Plec openly spoke about her desire to bring back Dobrev to the show as it takes its final bow after eight years on air.

How Elena Gilbert will figure in the final moments of "The Vampire Diaries" remains a huge mystery to fans. With the photo of Dobrev and Wesley together, there are speculations that Elena and Stefan will ultimately end up together. There's also that hotly-anticipated Delena reunion, but Somerhalder isn't quite sold on that romantic idea.

"This poor young girl from this tiny town ... she lost everyone she's ever loved, she burned her house down, she's now in a box," he told TVLine about his ideal ending for the pair in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8. "These guys have ruined her life, yet everybody wants her to end up with one of them."

The only clear hint that fans have so far comes from Plec herself, who tweeted that they have filmed "that will break your goddam heart" for "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8.

Dobrev exited the show after "The Vampire Diaries" Season 6, despite the fact that her character was the central figure of the show. Instead of her killing her off, Elena was put in deep slumber through the entanglement curse which binds her to her best friend Bonnie.
