"This Is Us" veteran actor Gerald McRaney joins the cast as a series regular in the new Fox series "24: Legacy." He is hanging up his doctor's coat for a while.

According to Deadline, McRaney will play Henry Donovan, who is the father of the presidential candidate Senator John Donovan ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" actor Jimmy Smits) in "24: Legacy." His character is a powerful oil man who is dedicated to putting his son in the White House, no matter what the obstacles.

The "24: Legacy" follows an ex-Army Ranger Eric Carter ("Straight Outta Compton" actor Corey Hawkins) and outgoing Counter Terrorist Unit director Rebecca Ingram ("Westworld" actress Miranda Otto), Entertainment Weekly reported. They team up to thwart a terrorist attack in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, Henry will not be too pleased when he learns that Ingram is taking a break from helping her husband John campaign to deal with this terrorist threat.

Hawkins is going to be a worthy successor to Kiefer Sutherland (Jack Bauer) as the "24: Legacy" has both the strengths and weakness of the original "24." Teddy Sears (Keith Mullins), Dan Bucatinsky (Andy), Anna Diop (Nicole Carter), Ashley Thomas (Isaac Carter), Charlie Hofheimer (Marcus Grimes), Coral Peña (Gia), Raphael Acloque (Jadalla "JAD" Bin-Khalid), and Sheila Vand (Nilaa) also star in the Fox's reboot.

For McRaney, the "24: Legacy" is a familiar territory since he recurs his role as Raymond Tusk on Netflix's "House of Cards." His character is a billionaire businessman who yields strong influence in Washington.

McRaney also has been recurring on NBC's breakout new family drama series "This Is Us" as Dr. K/Dr. Nathan Katowshy. He will be back when the show returns from hiatus this month. Stone Manners Salners Agency and Course Management represented him.

"24: Legacy" is set to premiere on Feb. 5, Sunday, after the "Super Bowl LI" before moving to Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
