More than a month away from now, the upcoming monster movie "Kong: Skull Island" will finally hit theaters. On that note, the marketing team of the film has just released a TV spot aiming to whet the fans' appetite for the previously announced, "Kong vs. Godzilla" showdown set for release in 2020.
According to a report from Cinema Blend, the latest promotional ad for "Kong: Skull Island" features a callback to Godzilla's history during the early 1950's. Titled "Reign," the footage sees Bill Randa (played by John Goodman) talking about the number of ships and planes that have disappeared at Skull Island. He continued stating that nuclear missions conducted in 1954 were launched to kill something.
While normal viewers would assume that the bombing mission was intended for Kong, the site reports that it's actually an indirect reference to "Godzilla" in 2014. Fans will remember that the follow-up movie opened with a montage showing the giant beast getting nuked in the same year mentioned by Goodman's character. It's also worth noting that 1954 was the year when Godzilla debuted in theaters on Japan.
It was in 2015 when rumors began floating around that a trilogy is in the works involving King Skull Island, Godzilla 2 and the Kong vs. Godzilla project. Collider reported that the new property will include the Monarch team to link the first two movies and ultimately build up towards the Kong vs. Godzilla movie.
